Helpful tidbits for parents and entrepreneurs
Meet Tara Chandler, stay at home mom and licensed esthetician who is passionate about non-toxic cosmetics and educating people on safer alternatives in skin care. Although she admits that the scheduling and mutli-tasking has been a challenge, she wouldn't have it any other way. She feels blessed that this business has given her the opportunity to stay home with her 2 year old son, and her financial security during a tough economic time.
1. Tell us about your business and the service that you provide:
I am an independent consultant with Ava Anderson Non-Toxic. I am responsible for educating consumers about the dangerous toxins in their personal care products. I also share with my customers a safer alternative to care for their skin. Ava products contain no PEGs, no phthalates, no parabens, no SLS, no 1.4 dioxane and no 'fragrance'. Lastly, I share the business opportunity to represent revolutionary 'first in class' non-toxic products at very competetive prices with a generous compensation plan.
2. How did you decide to get started?
I've been aware of the dangers of toxic chemicals in personal care products for years. Unfortunately, there were very few natural alternatives with an affordable price point. When I heard about the launch of a brand new product line with zero toxic chemicals in their formulation, I jumped at the chance to represent it.
3. What kind of background or expertise do you have in your field?
I have been a licensed esthetician for the past six years and I love educating people about safe and healthy skin care.
4. What trends do you see in your current industry?
People are reading labels and educating themselves about product ingredients. Tools like the Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic database, which details ingredients in 52, 598 products, are making it easier for consumers to make better product choices for their families.
5. What things do you find most demanding about your job?
Juggling and multi-tasking! I am so lucky to be able to stay at home with my two year old. However, there are times when I just 'have' to get an email out or take an important call. It nevers fails that he, at that exact moment, has a meltdown or needs a diaper change! But I really can't complain!
6. What do you find to be the most rewarding about your job and your day to day routine?
I find it very rewarding to be able to earn an income on my own terms and schedule. I also enjoy arming people with information so they can make the best choices for their families.
7. What advice would you give to someone else who is interested in starting a business like yours?
You have to love and believe in the product you are selling. You have to be willing to put in the time it takes to make long lasting relationships. This business is really all about helping people and making connections!
8. What are you most proud of as a parent-preneur?
I'm proud I was able to figure out a way to earn an income AND stay at home with my son so that I can be the mom he needs and deserves. I feel like I have it all!
9. How have you been able to manage your time between work and your family?
I'm still trying to figure out the best way to manage my priorities. I learn a little bit more every day. Right now my challenge is to work after my son goes to bed. Caffeine helps!
10. What has been the most effective way for you to promote yourself?
Hosting parties/seminars. Facebook has also been an amazing resource. I am confident that OMM will be extremely effective as well!
Finally: What does your 'Milk Money' provide for you and your family?
More financial security so that we may have the 'extras' so many people in this economy feel they need to give up. I'm really hoping my 'Milk Money' will also help us to remodel our kitchen sooner than later!
