Helpful tidbits for parents and entrepreneurs
Hi, my name is Kandra Morales. I just moved back to Southern California from the Southern Oregon Coast, to be near family. I'm a full-time work at home / stay at home mom of two little ones. I have a 3 year old son w/ Autism, and an 18 month old daughter. They both keep me plenty busy!
1. What businesses do you and/or your family run?
I own my own AmeriPlan business. I market discount dental and health plans, along with our fantastic business opportunity.
2. What made you decide to work from home?
I always knew that once I had kids, I would want to stay home and raise them. That was always important to me. And now that I have a special needs child, it's especially essential.
3. What sort of things does being self-employed allow you to do, for example, being involved in your child's life, school projects...etc?
Being self-employed has been a tremendous blessing. My son is non-verbal and requires not only Speech Therapy, but Occupational Therapy as well as ABA. And to get him as many hours of therapy that's required by his doctors, I have become his "in-home therapist" as well. Plus there are all of his doctor's visits here and there to get him the help he needs, and he's on a special diet and takes supplements each day. If it had not been for AmeriPlan, he would not get the help he needs and his sister would not get the one on one time with mom and dad that she needs. This has honestly been a true blessing for our family. I am able to be home with our 2 children, I am able to take my son to all of his appointments and still contribute to our families income. Working outside the home would NOT be an option for me.
It's my passion in this business to help other moms find this freedom as well. We are fortunate to be on the Freedom At Home Team and have the support and friendships needed to have true success working from home.
4. How do you feel your children see you as an entrepreneur? What things are they learning by watching you work?
I think right now they're a little too young to understand, but I hope that they learn how to have a strong work ethic, lots of motivation, and to have a high inner drive to succeed.
5. How is being a self-employed parent difficult? What sort of things (if any) would make your job easier?
I think the hardest part about working at home, has been trying to establish a routine. I think setting a schedule (and sticking to it) has made everything a lot easier.
6. What would you most like for consumers to know about you and the businesses that you run?
I offer discount dental and health plans, which can help so many people save money! Especially in these tough times, with all of the lay offs, job cuts, and high premiums for healthcare plans.
7. What are you most proud of as a parent?
Watching my kids grow and learn new things. They also have taught me so much about myself.
8. Do you have any advice for other parents who are running their own businesses or want to?
Set a schedule a set up a dedicated office area. Be consistent with everything that you do, and don't get discouraged. And set goals!
9. What was your favorite childhood toy?
Mr. Potato Head
