Clear & Present Dangers - Member Articles

Do you ever wonder what lurks in your household cleaners? What about the personal care products that you use on yourself & family each and every day?

Have you ever found it hard to breathe while you are doing routine tasks like cleaning?

Harsh chemicals commonly found in households like ammonia, bleach and formaldehyde are considered toxic by the EPA. Severe health issues such as asthma, allergies, cancer and a range of maladies from skin irritations to fatigue and behavior problems can be directly linked to chemicals in households. (Dr. Phillip Landrigan, Director of Mt. Sinai’s Center for Children’s Health and the Environment) (www.childenvironment.org) The scary thing is that these are products found everywhere in our homes – the very places that should be the safest!

As a first-time mom, nothing was more important than to provide the most pristine environment I could for our daughter, Natalie. I never gave a second thought that the brands I knew and trusted were toxic. After learning these facts, I was upset, disappointed and felt betrayed by these large, well-known companies. How are they allowed to market these products? Well, the answer is simple. First of all, big companies are not heavily regulated. Through government loopholes, most companies are not required to put ingredients on their labels. Secondly, these toxins were not proven to pose an immediate threat to one’s life. But then I asked myself, “Does it matter if the threat is immediate or cumulative?” The fact that they can cause severe permanent damage at any exposure is enough for me to say “NO MORE!”

Bottom line is, most companies do not use safer, natural ingredients or put the ingredients they do use through rigorous testing and purifying processes because, and no pun intended, but it’s the bottom line – it’s just too expensive. They are leveraging the risk of higher manufacturing costs versus the chance being found liable for causing these types of health risks. The only “duty” these companies are forced to perform is provide a warning label on the products. In my personal opinion, if a regular household cleaner like Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes has to put a precautionary statement that reads, “Hazards to humans and domestic animals”, then maybe we should think twice about bringing it into our homes. I know you’re going to do exactly what I did after I learned that fact – run right to your Lysol bottle and read the back for yourself.

Here are more alarming facts you may not be aware of:

•    Of chemicals commonly found in homes, 150 have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities. - Consumer Product Safety Commission
•    There has been a 26% increase in breast cancer since 1982. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women aged 34 to 55, killing more than 40,000 women across the country every year. “I believe it is high time to seriously consider environmental chemicals as the most likely cause of this sudden increase in risk.” says Dr. Ana Soto, breast cancer specialist at Tufts Medical School.
•    After analyzing 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products, 884 were found to be toxic. - National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
•    More children under four die of accidental poisonings at home than are accidentally killed with guns at home. -National Safety Council
•    The EPA has actually stated that indoor air pollution is one of the nation's most important environmental health problems and further, toxic chemicals in homes are three times more likely to cause cancer than any outdoor airborne pollutants.

So, what is the alternative? Safer, more natural products that are non-caustic, pH balanced and are guaranteed to be:

•    Safer for your home and family
•    A better value than grocery and retail store brands
•    Unique and exclusive
•    Environmentally responsible
•    Scientifically proven to work

Our families, especially our children, are our most precious assets. They depend on us as mothers and caretakers, to provide a healthy, safe environment for which they can learn & grow.

You have a safer, better choice when it comes to cleanliness, safety & effectiveness – without spending any more money then what you’ve already budgeted. In fact, these alternatives save money – an added bonus!  Honestly, as a mother, you can agree, we cannot put a price on the health & wellness of our children.
