July Member Spotlight - Sharon Holbrook

Cybertary is a Virtual Administrative and Business Support Company and is the only franchise of this nature in the U.S.  The company was founded by Patricia Beckman, a woman who realized she was missing her children growing up and wanted a mom-preneur business...and Cybertary was born.

1.  Tell us about your business and the service you provide:

Cybertary provides occasional, reliable business support to businesses that may not need or want to hire and employee but still need assistance.  There are over 150 ways we can provide services to our clients but a few are: newsletters, marketing support, bookkeeping, presentations....and more.

2.  How did you decide to get started?

Just like our founder, I realized I missed so many events as my children were growing up.  I now have grandchildren and was determined I would not miss their early years so I looked for many years for a way to accomplish this.  This home business allows me to have it all.

3.  What kind of background or expertise do you have in your field?

My experience includes performing on many fronts that mirror this business:  business analysis using Excel and other software, presentations using PowerPoint, customer service excellence.

4.  What trends do you see in your current industry?

This era is more about finding work that pleases an individual, and there are more people looking for this type of business because almost everyone has some skill that can be transferred.  Just as an example, Cybertary was born as a home based business in 2005 and almost immediately turned it into a franchise due to the positive acceptance.  My franchise was the 5th in early 2009 and a year later we no have 25+.

5.  What things do you find to be the most demanding about your job?

As with all small businesses, we wear more hats that we can possibly juggle.  Finding the time to do it all is the most demanding, and I too use a Cybertary to help me with the work that keeps me from helping my clients.

6.  What do you find to be the most rewarding about your job and day to day routine?

My day is my own - I get to choose what I do, when I do it and who I do it for.  This job allows me to help my daughter and her family with day care for 4 year old twins and a baby, and that alone is its own reward.  I wouldn't trade that for anything.

7.  What advice would you give to someone else who is interested in starting a business like yours?

Know that any business you start requires up to a year of reserve funds while you grow the business.  Most businesses fail due to cash flow so be sure you have that figured out.  Anyone going into business has to also understand that the minutia of running a business can swallow your passion quickly and the business now runs you instead of you running the business.  Learn to delegate.

8.  What are you most proud of as a parent-preneur?

Although being a single parent during my children's growing up years was difficult, the positive that came from that was a work ethic that I believe my children adhere to today.  They are of a generation that values differently than my generation and they have taught me thier values as well - work and life balance.  I am proud of us as a family that we both appreciate those things.

9.  How have you been able to manage your time between work and your family?

Time management has always been part of my life and using a calendar with pre-planned time is key.  You have to choose your priority and plan for it.

10.  What has been the most effective way for you to promote yourself?

Networking, networking, networking.

Finally:  What does your "Milk Money" provide for you and your family?

Daycare for my children - and fun for Grammy!
