Sweet Charity: Increasing Donations Using Social Media
By Kari Rippetoe

Non-profits and charitable organizations have so much to gain from using social media: not only is it a low- to no-cost online marketing channel, but the heart of social media is community (hence why it's called "social").  Nothing builds support for causes better than community outreach and grassroots efforts. It's a natural fit.

Build a Ning Community

Using Ning, you can build a free online community with groups, forums to discuss relevant topics, an events page, and a page to post photos.  You can brand your Ning community page with your logo and colors, add RSS feeds to your organization's blog, allow members to post meetups for local drives, and add links to donate via Paypal.  You can even create badges for members to put on their own websites. Here's a great example from the Parents of the Our Milk Money Organization.

New Website Lists Services of Self Employed Parents
Posted by Success

Self-employment particularly among women, many of whom are mothers, is growing at a fast rate, faster even than men owned business. While many begin their work-at-home search hoping to find a job, starting a business is probably the fastest and easies way to start making money at home. But once the product or service is created, the real work is getting the word out. A new website helps self-employed parents by offering a directory that consumers can use to find products and services.

Our Milk Money was started by two work-at-home moms Ally Loprete and Kelli Shand who wanted to help parents find ways to achieve the financial means to stay home or provide more for their children, and to educate consumers about the products and services found through self-employed parents.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, Ally Loprete and Kelly Shand want to make sure the money paid to a business goes into the right pocket. The Stevenson Ranch residents have started a online business directory (www.ourmilkmoney.com) that lists hundreds of business owners across the country who are all self-employed parents. As self-employed parents themselves, the founders believe that while their idea is a new concept still taking shape, it offers numerous benefits to not other working parents, but also to the everyday consumer.

By Angela Shupe
Business Opportunities Weblog
www.business-opportunities.biz

When a business looks for a place where they can advertise, it usually means they need to look for affordable advertising in an area that is related to the market they are trying to reach. Our Milk Money takes a different approach to that by giving parents a place to promote their business amongst others that are just like them. People that just want to work from home whether it’s to care for their children or even their grandchildren.

Women Who Inspire Me
By Gopher Girl

Last night I attended a social networking meeting I have been meaning to attend for awhile. Although my schedule has been hectic, it was a meeting I wasn’t about to miss. BizEMoms was hosting another parent inspired company called Our MIlk Money. As I listened during the meeting, what intrigued me the most was the passion and determination of the leaders. Supportive and caring, these women possessed qualities I highly admire. They are truly momprenuers.

OurMilkMoney Business Feature on the Mommy Perks Yahoo Group

Lorraine Padilla, Mommy Perks
www.mommyperks.com/phxmetro

Mommy Perks was introduced to Our Milk Money through co-owner Shara Lawrence-Weiss. As a new business, OMM was gladly accepting of ideas, tips and networking opportunities. Co-founder of OMM, Ally Loprete, became quick friends with Shara and since that time they have begun to build on their relationship in an effort to support a mutual interest: their advertisers!

Although they do not solicit each other's advertisers for business, they do refer one another and support each other's concepts. Both businesses work hard to support small business, encouraging their members to shop local and small - to keep the money "in house" when possible.

Mommy Perks is proud to support Our Milk Money and we encourage you to stop by their website soon to check out their listings, blogs and more.

The more our advertisers are linked to like-sites, the better for THEM - they will be seen twice as much by the same people. That's a good thing, in case you wondered.

A little info on the owners and founders of OMM...

Ally and Kelli are friends and neighbors who realized that they had many things in common.  One of their goals was to start a business that they could work from home, so they could be home with their children, and watch them grow.  They didn't want to miss out on the many "firsts" that a lot of moms miss when they have to work away from home.

They also wanted to educate all of us consumers in the benefits, and need for us to purchase products and services from self employed parents.  Do you see a similarity between OMM and Mommy Perks?  Yes, but not in everything.

I would suggest you visit www.ourmilkmoney.com and read more about these women, their ideas, and Mission for their business.  You will see why we at Mommy Perks consider them alliances, rather than competitors.

Press Release
A Website to Unite and Support Self-Employed Families Across the Country

What began as an idea quickly became an obsession and now is on the verge of becoming a movement. A new website has just launched that in the eyes of its founders and members could change the world. OurMilkMoney.com is an online directory of self-employed parents across the country. The concept is simple: buy what you would normally buy online or otherwise, but search with OurMilkMoney.com, and your money will go to a family.

In this day and age, the average American family cannot exist on one income, so in some cases both parents continue working outside the home in an effort to survive. As a result, they are forced to send their children to daycare, and on weekends time is spent doing household chores rather than engaging in quality family time. Other families who have chosen to keep one parent at home are forced to find ways to bring in a supplemental income IN ADDITION to raising a family. Fortunately over the last decade, the superior age of technology has created more opportunities for parents to become self employed, but still many remain skeptical about leaving their steady paychecks.

In the summer of 2007 Ally Loprete suddenly found herself laid off from her long time corporate job in the entertainment industry. “It turned out to be a blessing in disguise,” says Loprete, “I never would have left on my own, but after being home for only a few months, I saw a massive improvement in my son’s development. I decided I would never leave him again. I had to find a way to stay home.” It was then that Loprete came up with the concept of OurMilkMoney.com. “I knew that by empowering other parents and encouraging them to purchase only each other’s products and services, our businesses would thrive and so would our children!” Kelli Shand, a friend of Loprete and a stay at mom of two boys, instantly jumped on board. Shand says, “It was the kind of idea that shouldn’t be ignored and makes you want to immediately become a part of it.”

Once Loprete and Shand put the word out about the concept, they quickly became overwhelmed with the onslaught of positive responses. “We were getting about 30 applications a day for a site that didn’t even exist yet.” Shand laughs, “People from all over the country were asking how they could get involved.”
Loprete adds “It was clear that something like this was tremendously needed.”

Last month the site launched with a whopping 1500 business listings in 70 major markets across the country, not including Canada. The price of a business listing? A mere $25 for the year. The reason? Most home based businesses don’t have substantial advertising budgets. The founders promise that they won’t let large corporations take over the site with big ads, as it would defeat the purpose.

Its members are already raving. “As a parent, and small business owner, it can be tough to find the time to market my products to the general public.” says Lisa Smith, Owner and CEO of RegionzKidz.com, “When I was introduced to Our Milk Money, I jumped at the chance to be a part of it.”

Shara Lawrence-Weiss, owner of PersonalChildStories.com and co-owner of MommyPerks.com feels strongly that the success of this company is based on the passion behind the project. “At OMM the owners are invested in what they are doing. They want to help promote me and see my business grow…in my opinion, that is the underlying difference between a mediocre company and a great one.”

Others see it as a chief improvement for our culture. “I believe that Our Milk Money is the support that all parent-owned businesses have longed for. It’s mission is incredible.” says Lisa Lange, founder of ReadingAboutMe.com, “Together we are going to change the world.”
